More than 25 years in environmental monitoring. Still asking what comes next.

Laurent Rousseau, founder of OCEASOFT and author of Monitoring Today

I founded OCEASOFT in 1999 and led the company as it developed connected environmental monitoring solutions and expanded internationally. That journey brought together the things that continue to interest me most: technology, entrepreneurship and the practical challenge of making measurements people can trust.

OCEASOFT became part of Dickson in 2019. In September 2026, Copeland completed its acquisition of Dickson, bringing that history into a broader cold chain technology group. Building a company in this field gave me a perspective that spans the sensor, the wireless connection, the software and the people who depend on the information they produce.

From building systems to questioning them

Environmental monitoring sits at an unusual crossroads. It connects physical reality with digital records, engineering with quality, and technical performance with everyday decisions. A measurement can look simple on a screen while depending on a much larger system working properly.

That is the perspective I bring to Monitoring Today: the curiosity of an engineer and the experience of a founder who has had to connect technology with real-world needs.

Why Monitoring Today

I created this publication to explore where environmental monitoring is heading — across cold chain, IoT, GxP and artificial intelligence — and what that means for the people designing, operating and relying on these systems.

I am particularly interested in the move from collecting measurements to understanding situations and supporting decisions. What can a system explain? What evidence supports its interpretation? Where should human judgement remain central?

My starting conviction is simple: as the software becomes more capable, the quality of the underlying measurement matters more than ever.
